RSG Project: Arthritis Intranet Wins APEX

Woo-hoo, some of our work for the Arthritis Foundation has won some awards. The APEX 2005 Seventeenth Annual Awards for Publication Excellence recognized the Arthritis Foundation's corporate Intranet, Online Response Manual, and Spanish sitelet. All those projects were fun, challenging, and meaningful for us---winning awards for them is icing on the cake!

Types of Web Experts
Different problems require different specialists. Leaky faucet? Call a plumber. Broken switch? Call an electrician. Heart problem? Cardiologist. Brain tumor? Neurologist.

But when it comes to your various website problems, who do you call? The Internet's still so new that most people just call up any "Web Designer" they can find. You need to know your specialists. Here's a great article on RainToday explaining the differences.

Are Your Projects Setup to Fail?
It's widely reported that around 20-30% of all large IT/software projects fail. What makes so many IT projects go bad?

There's a lot to learn from this Air Force document on software project management (Why Big Software Projects Fail - 12 Key Questions). The article provides a great historical background on project management in general, and how PM techniques that have worked for the military in ancient times (and that are still used in many companies now) do not work with the geeks of today.

Linux, Anarchy, and Tea
There's an interesting piece in the latest Harvard Business Review (subscription required) that explores similarities between the Linux open source community with Toyota's successful production process. Gotta love this quote from their summary:

The authors have, nonetheless, found surprising parallels between the anarchistic, caffeinated, hirsute world of Linux hackers and the disciplined, tea-sipping, clean-cut world of Toyota engineering.

Key takeaway? Cut the B.S. and red tape in your projects, get your people to talk more, and let 'em be proud of what they do. Stuff will get done.

High Speed Internet up 34%
According to the FCC, high speed internet use was up 34% for 2004, but apparently the US still ranks at about #16 in terms of broadband use.
